1040 militants of 5 outfits surrender in Assam

In a major surrender, as many as 1040 militants of five Karbi ethnic militant groups, laid down arms and joined the mainstream society.

The surrender ceremony was organised in Guwahati on Tuesday. On the occasion, a total 1040 cadres of Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT), People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK), Karbi Longri N C Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), Kuki Liberation Front (KLF) and United People’s Liberation Army (UPLA) including self-styled Chief of PDCK Ingti Kathar Songbijit laid down their arms. Around 338 arms of different kinds along with 11203 bullets were surrendered by the militants.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal welcomed those members of Karbi militant groups back to mainstream society and congratulated them for deciding to give up arms while reposing faith in the constitution of the country.

He also commented that Karbi Anglong is one of the most beautiful districts in the state and he urged the surrendered militants to contribute in the mission of making Atmanirbhar Assam through Atmanirbhar Karbi Hills Region. Karbi youths have lots of potential and they must utilise it to make Karbi Anglong a developed region in the state by harnessing its tourism potential, he said.

Saying that due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s endeavour of equal development in every corner of the country Assam is making rapid strides towards prosperity, Sonowal congratulated the surrendered militants for coming back to mainstream society and urged them to contribute in the journey of state’s progress. The government’s role is not limited to only bringing back the militants but also it is committed to ensure a life of dignity and respect for those who have surrendered arms by facilitating opportunities for livelihood and employment, he added.

The Chief Minister also appreciated Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council led by CEM Tuliram Ronghang for ushering in a period of peace and prosperity in the Karbi Hills and he also commended the Unified Command structure comprising Assam police, Indian Army, Paramilitary and Intelligence Agencies for their success in bringing peace to the state.

Sonowal laid the foundation of an Industrial Park and permanent campus for ITI, Sootea at Jamugurihat in Sonitpur district. It may be noted that the Industrial Park will be built at a sprawling 315 bigha of land and the permanent campus of ITI, Sootea will be built with financial outlay of Rs. 25 crores.

Sonowal terming the women as the source of supreme energy said that the BJP led state government in the state through its commitment to the empowerment of women has been taking a series of steps to make women an important stakeholder in the process for economic development of the state. He said that during last several months the women Self Help Groups by selling the products produced by them across the country and outside earned several hundred crores. Chief Minister Sonowal while hailing this effort of the women SHGs said that this has helped the state to expedite its economic growth. Chief Minister Sonowal also said that true to the spirit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for Aatmanirbhar Bharat this achievement of the women SHGs would definitely help the state towards achieving Atmanirbhar Assam.

Chief Minister Sonowal also said that to strengthen the edifice of self-reliant Assam the people will have to work diligently with self-confidence. He said that the BJP led state government immediately after coming to power took several steps for qualitative and quantitative development of the state. As a result of this for the last four and a half years the state witnessed unprecedented growth stories with no incidence of any violence from any part of the state, he said. Citing a stark contrast between the erstwhile congress government and the present BJP led state government, Chief Minister Sonowal said that because of the good governance, peace and tranquillity and harmonious coexistence of the state were founded on a strong pedestal.

Chief Minister Sonowal also said that the Congress during its last 55 year rule kept the north bank of the Brahmaputra in complete darkness with no significant development initiatives for the people. However, contrary to the congress rule the present BJP government has unleashed never before development initiatives for the entire state.
